BRANCH

A Lounge Chair Inspired by Organic Architecture

2024
Personal Project/Case Study

Branch chair is a lounge chair that reflects the efficiency and balance found in natural structures. A minimal and elegant base suspends a supple and inviting cushioned seat, symbolizing a tree with a dense plume of foliage.

A concept that inspired and influenced the design was the philosophy of Organic Architecture, established by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. I found the idea of synergy between nature and manmade structures, could be expressed through furniture through the a combination of traditional, natural materials and modern manufacturing methods.

The color and material direction was inspired by the feeling of being out in nature in autumn. It is the time of the year when trees take the spotlight with their vibrant yet comforting tones of subtle greens, yellows, reds, and browns. The soft, supple calf leather and polished steel in a beige toned plating creates a comforting and luxurious aura.

In the design of the chair I tried to blend several different design philosophies and approaches; Frank Lloyd Wright’s philosophy of Organic Architecture and harmony between nature and manmade structures, the Japanese philosophy of Kanso or removing all except what is necessary, and the futuristic, organic approach of Ross Lovegrove.

The chair is constructed with padded calf leather cushions, upholstered around a molded plywood seat. The framework suspending the seat is comprised of 8 tapered steel tubes, which come together and attach to a single 3D printed joint. The unique architecture of the frame, creates an organic, seamless joint in the center which is the centerpiece of the chair.
